Last summer, a new med gave me a 4-month long respite from migraines – I was able to drink booze for the first time in 11 years.
YUP Reader: 11 years.
I hadn’t had more than sips of wine since I owned my cheese & wine bar. (And I obv love good wine.)
So I went out and got a case of my favorite German Riesling plus a case of Zweigelt. But what really stole the show?
My frozen watermelon daiquiris. I made them ALL. THE. TIME.
🍹 Happy hour on the back porch? Yup.
🍹 Saturday morning playdate? Oh hell yeah.
🍹 My house became the most popular hangout around.
The deliciousness was entirely dependent, however, on my watermelon-picking abilities.
Do you know how to pick a watermelon?? I had a vague idea (something about a yellow spot and a webby appearance?) but TBH I was winging it.
Finding the right website designer feels a lot like this
You thump, you sniff, you think you found a good one but… how do you even decide??
It's a guessing game. You hope you don't end up with something that looks farmers-market perfect, but tastes more like water than melon.
Here's what I've realized after years of watching businesses grow: your website needs evolve just like your business did, and you need the right strategist to help.
Knowing your starting point changes everything
I just wrote a whole blog post about how to choose the right website designer, and one thing is for sure.
Before you even start looking for help, you need to know exactly where you are in your business journey.
...Are you starting from scratch?
...Revamping an outdated site?
...Or maybe you’re somewhere in between – a site that has good bones but needs some strategic polish?
Sometimes a tune-up beats a tear-down
When business owners outgrow their starter sites, scrapping everything and starting from scratch is often the ideal path.
Is that the way you should go?
Honestly, it depends.
(Don't you hate that answer? But it's true.)
Here’s what I do know:
Sometimes your site doesn't need a total overhaul. It just needs to EVOLVE.
→ Maybe your site has great copy and graphics, and your offers are solid. But no matter how much you noodle, the design isn’t nearly as polished as your business.
→ Perhaps your site shows up in your browser the way you want. But the mobile version makes you want to toss your phone in the garbage disposal.
→ Or maybe your brand colors just don’t play nicely on your site the way they do elsewhere, and you can’t figure out why.

Reply with “more please!” and I’ll make you a lil walkthrough video. Or book a vibe check call to see if I’m the right for you.

P.S. Summer’s coming, and I’m still trying to master the art of watermelon selection. If you have any foolproof tips, hit reply! 🍹 Summertime Carolyn will be forever grateful.

Heather Cox Richardson reads her emails. When social media feels like an echo chamber, and the mainstream media isn't covering everything (or at least in-depth), I turn it all off and dive into Richardson's context-filled missives.
📚 Reading:
My first love is always literature, but these days my brain is too full and heavy. After Much Ado About Nada, I'm jonesing for more fluffy, cozy stuff. Just started The Blue Bistro, by Erin Hillenbrand 🤞

SEOSpace is the #1 way I monitor my VIP Client Members's sites (plus Google Search Console and manual reviews). Good news is, you don't need to be a pro to use it! It's a Chrome Extension that allows you to optimize your SQSP with step-by-step instructions on SEO best practices. I find it best for upkeep rather than starting with SEO basics (although I have a free mini-course for those!)
