🛶 The upgrade I finally admitted I needed

The deer scampered away.

The car hobbled.

👉 That's our 11-year-old SUV after a close encounter on a country road last year. The front bumper was hanging on by sheer determination and some zip tie magic a woman in the grocery store parking lot suggested.

But hey, it still ran, right?

Meanwhile, our 2009 sedan had hit 185k miles with no working AC (hello, Virginia summers 🥵) and this summer, the rear passenger door decided it was done cooperating.

Like, completely done.

We finally had to admit what we'd been avoiding: with two kids, even with our electric bike as a backup, none of this was convenient anymore – and the cars weren't safe.

And lemme tell you – buying cars is my least favorite thing on earth.

…First, you've gotta research, research, research to figure out what fits your family's weird specific needs AND your budget.

…Then comes the communication overwhelm. The absolute deluge of emails and texts from a million and one dealerships.(TFG I have a throwaway email account).

…And then the very worst part of all: negotiating. I'm a straightforward communicator. Can't everyone just say what they want without the dance? Can't your girl get a break??

^ Because I refuse to do this more than once every 10 years, we buckled down and did the damn thing.

Here's what I didn't see coming, though.

I knew I’d love a new car. Who wouldn’t?

But once we got our new hybrid home last week, I realized what I'd been unknowingly missing:

• A trunk I can open three different ways – including when my hands are full, so I don't strain my shoulder injury.
• A built-in phone charger for when my ADHD is heavy on the deficit, so I don't end up with a dead phone in the middle of nowhere.
• Hybrid gas mileage that isn’t draining our bank account every week.
• An optional 3rd row means we can finally enter the hallowed carpool club, freeing up extra time.

And for me, personally?

The biggest game-changer was the smooth, quiet ride that doesn't aggravate my connective tissue disorder.

It sounds dramatic, but going from "hobbling along" to "holy shit, this actually works FOR me" has been life-changing.
